Acrylic vs PU vs Laminate — The Kitchen Finish Guide
The shutter finish is the single most visible decision in a modular kitchen — it defines the colour, sheen, texture, and character of every cabinet face you see and touch daily. The three dominant finish families in Indian kitchens — laminate, acrylic, and PU paint — differ fundamentally in how they are made, how they age, how they clean, and what they cost. Choosing between them is not about which is “best” but about which matches your kitchen’s usage intensity, light conditions, and design intent.
Laminate — The Proven Workhorse
High-pressure laminate (HPL) is a sheet of resin-impregnated layers pressed under heat, bonded onto the shutter substrate. It is the most widely used kitchen finish in India for good reason: exceptional scratch and impact resistance, effortless cleaning, near-total immunity to fingerprints (especially in matte and textured variants), and the largest design library of any finish — hundreds of solid colours, woodgrains, stone effects and fabric textures from brands like Merino, Greenlam and Century. Modern premium laminates include anti-fingerprint “soft touch” matte surfaces and synchronised textures where the surface relief follows the printed woodgrain. For heavy-use family kitchens — the daily tadka, the pressure cooker steam, children’s fingerprints — laminate remains the most forgiving finish made.
Acrylic — The High-Gloss Statement
Acrylic finish is a solid PMMA (acrylic polymer) sheet bonded to the shutter face, delivering a deep, mirror-like gloss that no laminate can replicate — the surface has optical depth, almost like coloured glass. Acrylic kitchens photograph beautifully, amplify available light, and read as unmistakably premium. The trade-offs are real: gloss surfaces show fingerprints and require daily wiping with a microfibre cloth; the edges need matching edge-banding or aluminium framing; and acrylic scratches more easily than laminate, with scratches more visible on the glossy surface. Our standard recommendation: acrylic on wall cabinets — at eye level where the gloss impresses and hands rarely touch — with laminate or matte finishes on the hard-working base cabinets below.
PU Paint — The Designer’s Finish
Polyurethane (PU) paint is sprayed in multiple coats onto an MDF shutter, sanded between coats, and cured to a smooth, seamless, furniture-grade surface — matte, satin, or gloss, in literally any colour that can be mixed. PU is the finish of high-end European kitchens: no edge-banding lines (the paint wraps every edge and profile continuously), the ability to finish routed shaker profiles and curved shutters, and a depth of colour that laminate cannot match. It costs more than laminate or acrylic and requires quality spraying infrastructure — which is why it appears mostly in premium projects. Minor chips can be touched up and re-sprayed, something impossible with laminate or acrylic. For clients wanting a specific designer colour — a muted sage, a warm greige, a deep navy shaker kitchen — PU is usually the only honest route.
Side-by-Side — How to Decide
Durability: laminate leads, PU close behind, acrylic needs the most care. Looks: acrylic wins on gloss depth, PU wins on colour freedom and seamlessness, premium textured laminates win on realistic woodgrains. Maintenance: matte laminate is the easiest to live with; gloss acrylic demands the most wiping. Budget: laminate is the most economical, acrylic sits mid-range, PU is the premium tier. Most Elegant Decors kitchens in Faridabad and Delhi NCR combine two finishes deliberately — the combination delivers better real-world performance than any single finish everywhere.
Every Elegant Decors kitchen pairs your chosen finish with BWP marine plywood carcasses and Hettich or Hafele hardware, backed by a 5-year manufacturing warranty. Common Questions
Kitchen Finish FAQs
Which finish lasts the longest in Indian kitchens?
Laminate is the most scratch and heat-resistant finish for Indian cooking conditions. Acrylic looks more premium but requires more careful maintenance. PU paint is excellent for low-oil cooking households.
Which finish is easiest to clean?
Acrylic and PU gloss finishes are the easiest to clean — a damp cloth removes most stains. Matte PU and laminate require slightly more effort but are very manageable with regular wiping.
Can I mix different finishes in one kitchen?
Yes — mixing finishes is popular and looks premium. A common combination is matte laminate lower cabinets with acrylic upper cabinets, or a woodgrain island contrasting with gloss main cabinets.
Do you provide kitchen finish samples?
Yes — we bring physical samples of all available acrylic, PU and laminate finishes to your home so you can see how they look in your kitchen’s lighting before making a decision.
