The straight (single-wall) and parallel (galley) layouts are the workhorses of compact Indian kitchen design — and understanding when each excels can transform a narrow, awkward kitchen space into one of the most efficient cooking environments possible. Everything sits along a straight path, there are no corners to negotiate, and the cook moves in simple back-and-forth motions rather than diagonal crossings.

Straight Kitchen — Maximum Simplicity, Minimum Footprint

The straight kitchen places everything — hob, sink, refrigerator, and all storage — along a single wall, typically 8 to 12 feet long. Narrower than 105 and drawers collide with the opposite counter; wider than 150 and the turn-around efficiency starts to fade.

Parallel kitchens suit the long, narrow kitchen shells common in Faridabad and Delhi NCR builder floors and older DDA-format apartments — spaces 7 to 8 feet wide and 10 to 14 feet long that no other layout uses as efficiently. One run typically carries the window (ideal above the sink), and the closed end can host a tall unit bank with the refrigerator, oven tower, and pantry pull-out in one organised column.

Linear layouts reward light colours and continuous lines.
